Update: See info on Student Evaluations below.

Your final project is due at 2:00pm on Thursday, December 13. Please be sure to upload your final project (final web and source file folders) to the class server before the start of class.

In order to receive a grade for your final project, you must attend our last class meeting on Thursday, December 13 from 2:00pm – 5:00pm (room AET 105) for final project presentations and to take the final exam. Note that I’ve outlined the materials to study for the final exam in the Week 07 notes. Please come prepared for the final exam. This will be a “closed book” exam so be prepared to take the exam without referring to your notes.

I posted grades for your Assignment 6 and Quiz 4. Some of you did not post to your blog Part 3 of your Week 6 assignment. “Write a narrative critiquing the effectiveness of the website you’re re-designing for your final project. Base your critique on the objectives from “The Basics of Web Design” reading and the critiques we did Week 03.

Unfortunately, the SMC Online Student Evaluations are no longer accessible. Your feedback regarding this class is very important to me so I’ve posted a student evaluation for your response. It will only take a couple minutes and will really help me make improvements to this class and to my instruction. Your response is greatly appreciated — thanks!

November 19, 2012

For those who posted to the discussion section on Monday, I posted my response in the Discussion section regarding your Final Project choices. Remember to alter the name of the website you chose per the directions for the final project located here: http://www.classes.jamiecavanaugh.com/grdes65/final/   Let me know if you have any questions.

Remember that the Final Project site map and home page design comp are due Friday, November 23 .

Please note: As beginning web design students the challenge will be building your design, so don’t make it so complex that you won’t be able to build it! For the final project, your grade will be based on your design and your ability to build your project in HTML and CSS. In this class, we’ll cover One Column and Two Column CSS Layouts, so keep that in mind!

And, have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Answers to Questions on Class Goals Survey

At the end of the class will I be able to make any kind of web page?

The final project for this class is to re-design and build a small website. You will choose an existing website of your choice except I do not allow students to create their own portfolio website. The website must be a business or organization, and not a personal site for you or someone you know.

I am looking at purchasing Adobe Creative Cloud on a monthly basis instead of individual photoshop and dreamweaver software packages. Would this be sufficient for this class, or would you recommend this?

Yes, purchasing a subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud to have access to all the Creative Suite software is an excellent idea. Here’s more information about the Creative Cloud. Adobe has a  special rate of $19.99/mo for students until November 4, so now is a good time to purchase the subscription if you’re interested.

I would like to know how the quizzes work.

The quizzes are online and are 10 short-answer questions. When a quiz is due I’ll post a link to it in that week’s class notes. Please be sure to complete the quiz by the due date posted and be sure to hit the “Done” button at the end of the quiz to ensure it is submitted.

How can I find out more about Tumblr, and what about privacy and Tumblr?

Be sure to watch the “walk-through” video on Tumblr posted in the Class 01 notes. Here is another good resource on how-to use Tumblr.  We use Tumblr in this class to post some of your work in this class. My suggestion is to never post anything private on your Tumblr blog and if you do not want search engines to find your Tumblr site you may change this in your settings. Also, if privacy is an issue, I recommend deleting your Tumblr blog at the end of our 8-week class.

First Classroom Meeting
Thanks so much for posting your introductions on the smconline.org site. It’s been great “meeting” everyone and I’m really looking forward to meeting you in person at our first classroom meeting on Thursday, November 8 at 2:00pm in room AET 105. Please mark your calendars so you don’t forget!

For those who joined the class a bit late, please note that the link to the Class Notes is located in the right-hand column of this site. I don’t want anyone to miss all the good information from this week’s notes (!) …

Friendly Reminders
  • Be sure to post the URL for your Tumblr blog to the comments section (at the bottom) of the Week 01 notes. I created a Discussion topic for Tumblr questions so if anyone has a question it would be great if everyone could offer help to their fellow classmates!
  • Your Assignment 1 exercise files are due in the Dropbox on the smconline.org site by noon, Wednesday, October 31Please note that this is NOT entirely a self-paced course, there ARE specific due dates. The assignments are due on the dates given. So please keep up with your work and upload the assignments on time!
  • If you have any questions about any part of Assignment 1, please post it in the Discussion section of the smconline.org site.

October 22, 2012

THERE IS NO CLASS MEETING ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25.

This course is a hybrid class. In addition to the online course we’ll meet in the classroom for 3 meetings during the 8-week course. The location of the 3 classroom meetings will be AET 105. Below are the following dates. You must be present at all 3 classroom meetings.

Thursday, November 8 at 2:00pm – 5:05pm
Thursday, November 29 at 2:00pm – 5:05pm
Thursday, December 13 at 2:00pm – 5:05pm

For those of you who have already introduced yourself— thank you! It was great hearing a little about all of you.

If you haven’t introduced yourself yet, please do so in the Discussion section of the smconline.org course site. It’s the way I take attendance for the first week of class.

PLEASE START THE COURSE BY READING THE WEEK 01 NOTES (GET TO IT BY USING THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE “CLASS NOTES” NAVIGATION) AND COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENTS FOR NEXT WEEK.

Friendly Reminders
  • The Fourth edition of our textbook “Learning Web Design, A Beginner’s Guide to HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Web Graphics” was released August 21. Our textbook orders for the SMC bookstore are placed in Spring so it wasn’t possible to get this edition of the textbook in time for the Fall semester nor to revise the course without access to this new edition. Therefore please be sure that you get the Third edition of “Learning Web Design: A Beginner’s Guide to (X)HTML, StyleSheets, and Web Graphics” for this class.
  • Please remember to post the URL (web address) of your Tumblr blog to the comments sections located at the bottom of the page on the Week 01 class notes.
  • Most of you have not taken the Class Goals survey. The survey is really helpful so I have a better idea of your existing skills and goals for the class. There is a link to the Class Goals surgery under “Exercise”  in the Week 01 class notes.
  • We are using Photoshop CS5 or CS6 and Dreamweaver CS5 or CS6 in this class.  If you need to purchase software for this class, I have several online resources for software at a student discount on the FAQ page of this site.
  • Your Assignment 1 is due Wednesday, October 31 at 12noon. Please refer to the Week 01 notes for details on your assignments. In addition to reading the textbook and watching the videos, you have exercises (Part 1 and Part 2) that need to be uploaded to the Dropbox on the smconline.org course site. When you upload your zip file to the Dropbox, please be sure to include your name in your file names. For example: yourlastname_assignment1.zip
