Hi class! — Thank you so much for a wonderful class! — I hope to see you all in GrDes67 (Web Design 3) in Fall 2011!

Important Notes:

1. Be sure to post your final project website to the class server by noon, Thursday, April 7 and to complete the Final Exam before 12midnight Friday, June 10.

2. Please post the supporting documentation for your final project along with a description of your design process to your WordPress blog. The supporting documentation is the research and competitive analysis of other college radio websites, the Creative/Communication Brief, and the Site map. If you could also include these documents in your source_files folder on the class server, that would be perfect. Thanks!!

3. All of the notes posted in Week 08 are for your own information. There are no additional assignments this week except for the final project and final exam. (phew!) But be sure to check out the notes. I will keep this class website available to you until Spring 2012.

4. If you haven’t done so already, please complete the On line Evaluation for this class. In this evaluation, you will be evaluating me, not the teaching platform. Please mark one response for each of the items as indicated on the form.

Here’s how to access the On Line Evaluation for this class:

As soon as I see your final project comps, you should get started on your final project right away! I can’t believe you’ve come down to the last weeks.

Hi class!

Please be sure to create a blog post on your own site where your fellow group members can post their critiques of your midterm project. — Thanks!

Also, remember that a requirement of this class is to be able to post your midterm and final projects to the class server. So if you are having any problem doing so,  please review the information and the video on the FTP page. If you still have an issue, please let me know.

For anyone who has not uploaded a midterm project to the class server, Friday, May 27 is the last day to do so. I will accept your project for a late grade only up until the 27th.

For those of you who posted comments about your fellow classmates’ midterm projects, thank you so much! I think feedback from other’s can be very helpful to the development of your work.

Thank you for your Assignment 4 files. I have posted all of your grades to-date, so if anything is missing from the grade book you can safely assume it’s because I did not receive your file(s).

Hi Everyone!

Good news (or at least I think it is good news for you!)

Your midterm project is due by noon on Friday, May 20 (instead of May 17) . Please be sure you post your midterm project on the server,
http://www.everythingaboutweb.com/grdes66online/

Thank you so much for your Assignment 3 files. I have posted all of your grades to-date, so if anything is missing from the grade book it’s because I did not receive your file(s). Several of you did not do the website critique, or I missed you critique. You may email me  your link to the website critique if I’ve missed it. If I have any comments for you about your assignment, I have added it to the gradebook section — just click on the grade to see my notes.

The Week 4 class notes are posted (the link is the right-hand navigation) Note, that some of the assignments for next week are due by Tuesday, May 17. This content will help you with your midterm so the sooner you complete it the more helpful it will be to you in building your midterm project.

More info about midterm project:

* Please label your folder midterm_yourlastname. I will delete folders that are not properly labeled.
* Please be sure to upload your entire folder and not just the contents of the folder. If you don’t upload the entire folder, your index.html will be the only page to display. (If this happens, please delete your index.html file from the server.)

The instructions for uploading to the class server are here:
http://grdes66winter.wordpress.com/ftp/

Remember  the due date for the midterm project is noon on Friday, May 20. Be sure you understand the specifications for the midterm project. Please be sure to upload your midterm project to the class server by this due date. See the week 02 class notes for information on how to connect to the class server. Please be sure you know how to upload your “midterm_lastname” folder there before the final deadline.

Please be sure that you name your web project folder “midterm_lastname.” And be sure you upload your entire folder and not just the individual html pages and images folder. Please review the FTP video demonstration to make sure you understand how to do this.

Here is what I will be looking for when grading your midterm projects:

Page Layout

1. Appealing to target audience

1. Use of different colors in page backgrounds/text is limited to a maximum of three or four colors plus neutrals
2. Color is used consistently
3. Color has good contrast with associated text
4. Color is not used alone to convey meaning (accessibility)
5. Use of color and graphics enhances rather than distracts from the site
6. Graphics are optimized and do not significantly slow download
7. Each graphic used serves a clear purpose
8. Image tags use the alt attribute to configure alternate text to display if the browser or user agent does not support images (accessibility)

Content Presentation

1. Common fonts such as Arial or Times New Roman are used
2. Techniques of writing for the Web are used: headings, bullet points, short sentences in short paragraphs, use of white space, etc.

Functionality

1. All internal hyperlinks work
2. All external hyperlinks work

Assignment 2 & Quiz 1
Due: Noon, Tuesday, May 3 (wk3).
Midterm design comps
Due: Noon, Friday, May 6

Thank you so much for your Assignment 1 and WordPress blog postings. I have posted all of your grades to-date, so if anything is missing from the grade book it’s because I did not receive your file(s). If you have any homework outstanding, you can turn it in for a late grade before Tuesday, May 3. Please do not fall behind with your work because it is very difficult to catch up on such a tight 8 week schedule.

If you could upload all your assignments for the week in one zip file, that seems to work best. Be sure to include your last name in the file name. For example, you can name your file assignment2_lastname.zip.

This week we’ll review file structure and FTP (file transfer protocol)
. I’ve created video files with a demonstration of both of these topics. You can watch the videos using the YouTube file embedded in the week 02 notes– or for a larger version, you can download the .mov file from the week 02 notes. You’ll need QuickTime Player in order to view the file. If you don’t have the QuickTime Player, I have included a link to a free download in the week 02 notes.

I’d like you to practice using FTP to connect to the class server as outlined in the notes and the video.

I’ve also given you the assignment for your Midterm Project. Your Midterm Project is due by Noon, Tuesday, May 17. Please read through the assignment carefully and post any questions you have about the Midterm to the discussion area on the smcline.org site. You’ll need to upload your Midterm Project to the class server so it is important that you understand how to use the FTP feature in Dreamweaver.

Remember that Dreamweaver is only a HTML editing tool and you’ll need to complete the design of your midterm project website in Photoshop before you start building it in Dreamweaver. So be sure to complete your design comp for me by Friday, May 6.

After you have completed your  assignments for this week, please upload the zipped folder with your work to the DropBox on the smconline.org site by noon, Tuesday, May 2.

Note: On the assignments section located in the main navigation of this site, I also post your assignments for the week.

Thanks!

Please read through the note below and the watch the 2 video messages from me. Note that there are prerequisites for this class. Please let me know if you have any questions about this.

Messages from Jamie

Note: These we recorded earlier in the semester. Your due date is Tuesday, April 26.
Week01_Topics
Week01_Assignments

(The two videos above are Flash swf files, please let me know if you have any problems viewing the videos.)

Thank you to all of you who have introduced yourself in the Discussion area on the smconline.org. If you haven’t done so already, you may want to read through the introductions so you can meet your fellow class mates.

Important note: It is very important that you keep up with the class notes, assignments and quizzes for this class. Your grade will be lowered by a full grade for any work handed in late. (I DO NOT accept any work later than a week from the due date.) Please keep up with the work — because the class is only 8 weeks it moves quickly.

Just a reminder about some important details about the class and your assignment:

  • The prerequisites for this class are: Graphic Design 65 (Web Design 1) and Graphic Design 64 (Digital Imaging for Design) OR Entertainment Technology 37. If you have not completed these two classes first, you may not take Graphic Design 66. For those who are also taking GrDes 65 this semester. I do not recommend taking GrDes65 and GrDes66 simultaneously. I want you to succeed in this class and having the prerequisites is an important part of your success in this class.
  • As noted in the Introduction information, it is necessary to have basic Photoshop skills for this class. If anyone does not have these skills, you will need to drop the class and take a basic Photoshop class before taking this clas.. Based on my experience, it’s difficult for students to keep up with the class if they’re struggling with learning Photoshop at the same time.
  • It is also important that you have basic HTML skills. Some of you who have taken GrDes 65 — for those who haven’t, I require that you demonstrate basic HTML skills in order to proceed with this class.
  • Please be sure you have purchased, or have ordered, the required textbook for this class. Information about the book is in the class syllabus
  • Note I’ve added discussion topics for general questions and questions specific to the week 01 notes for this week. Please make use of the Discussion section of smconline.org to ask any questions you have about the class and this week’s notes and assignments. Also note there is a “Student Forum” section for students to pose questions about outside or personal web projects.

Reminder:

Please be sure to read through the Introduction section, Syllabus, and the Week 01 notes.

Your assignment is to Introduce yourself in the Discussion area of this site and to complete Assignment 1. Post both as a zip file to the “Dropbox” on the smconline.org site by noon, Tuesday, April 26. Please be sure to include your name in your file names. For example: assignment1_yourlastname.zip.

Please let me know if you have any questions and post the questions to either the comments section of this website or the the Discussion section on the smconline.org site.
