Week 01

Lecture: Course Intro, Syllabus, Class Textbooks, What is After Effects?, What is Final Cut Pro?, Class Goals, What is Motion Graphics?, Motion Graphics — Design Process, The Designer — The Creative Process
Assignment: Sign up with Tumblr and post a motion graphics video to your blog

Week 02

Lecture: Overview of basic concepts, exploring the After Effects interface, workflow, building first animation
Assignment: Lesson 1 – Basic Animation

Week 03

Lecture: Animation Techniques: Manipulating key frames
Assignment: Lesson 2 – Advanced Animation, Project 1: “Sketching” first animation project (Due week 5)

Week 04

Lecture: Trimming layers, using blending modes and effects. Project Goals and Objectives, Who is the Audience?
Design Principles – Properties: shape, color, surface, size, dimension

Week 05

Lecture: Animating text and working with music.

Week 06

Lecture: Grouping layers

Week 07 – No class meeting this week

Lecture: Shape Layers, Rendering.  A discussion and demo on how to prepare files. And how to move files back and forth between AE and Photoshop. Design Principles – Time: sequence, tempo, and transition

Week 08

Lecture: Track & Key, Tackling several essential skills for creating special effects.

Design Principles: Transformations: direction, gesture, displacement, kinetics/physics and velocity

Week 13

Lecture: Intro to Digital Video. Intro to Final cut. AE and Final Cut how are they different and how they work together. Essential skills for creating special effects, Capturing Video; Editing Techniques in Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Pro – Importing footage and basic editing

Week 14

Lecture: Editing Techniques in Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Pro – Importing footage and basic editing.

Week 15

Assignment: working on final project in-class. Final Exam review.

Week 16

Final Project Critiques –Tuesday, June 7, final exam
